Jean-Louis Forain, Danseurs en rose. |
Tired dancers are leaving the stage under applause. Their make-up is melting, running down their faces, but the smell of violet powder is still floating in the air. Like Jean-Louis Forain's paintings, 1889 Moulin Rouge is delighfully blurry, foggy and sensual. Through the clouds of cigar smoke, we can guess the bodies of the dancers in various states of undress. Backstage, we're drinking absinth and plum liquor, and the air is filled with rose and iris, saturated the warm scent of resting bodies.

1889's drydown is dense, waxy and slightly powdery like the feel of a vintage lipstick. It becomes more and more animalic and musky after a few hours. The "fur" accord mentioned in the notes is brilliant, soft and delicate musky scent of between a cat's ears. I could bathe myself in it, throw on a mink stole and walk around everywhere like a fabulous timeless cocotte.

Nana and a vintage compact. |
Anyhow, I can't stop thinking that 1889 belongs in another century. It's like l'Heure Bleue (and most carnation-heavy, powdery fragrances) : iconic of the Belle-Epoque, and by that inevitably nostalgic. 1889 is too carnal and too classy at the same time to blend in the boring, beige plastic aesthetics of the 2000's. I really like Moulin Rouge, with its old-fashioned and naughty elegance, powdery, slightly sweet and waxy altogether.
